AMC MCQ Pass Standard Raised for 2026: What the Change Means for Candidates

In December 2025 the Australian Medical Council (AMC) announced that it would introduce "a slight increase to the pass standard" for its Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) Multiple Choice Question examination, applying to exams from 2026 onward. The announcement caused anxiety in candidate forums out of proportion to its content. This article sets out what the AMC actually said, what stays the same, and how a Pakistani candidate preparing for a 2026 or 2027 sitting should respond.

What changed

  • The cut score, the underlying ability level needed to pass, rose slightly.
  • The change applies to examinations sat from 2026 onward. Candidates who sat in 2025 were assessed under the previous standard, and past results are not reassessed.

What did not change

  • The reported scale. "Candidate performance and feedback will continue to be reported on a scale of 0–500, with the pass mark described as 250." The new cut score is integrated into that scale, so a result still reads as pass at 250.
  • The exam. The AMC's FAQ states that the exam is not harder: its content, format and structure are unchanged. It remains 150 multiple-choice questions over 3.5 hours, delivered as a computer-adaptive test, blueprinted across adult health (medicine 30 per cent, surgery 20 per cent), women's health, child health, mental health, and population health and ethics (12.5 per cent each).
  • The standard's basis. It is "set at the level expected of graduating medical students in Australia", reviewed periodically through benchmarking with Australian medical schools. The 2026 adjustment came from that routine review.
  • Preparation resources. The AMC's free MCQ preparation app, launched in 2025 with 210 practice questions and feedback, continues in 2026 with a refreshed question set from April 2026.

What "computer-adaptive" means for the pass

Because the test adapts to the candidate, a pass is not a fixed percentage of correct answers. The AMC's FAQ makes the point directly: passing means you answered questions above the cut score correctly; it does not mean a higher percentage of questions must be answered correctly. Candidates must answer all 150 questions; failing to complete the examination may leave insufficient information for a reliable result.

How to respond

  1. Do not change the method; raise the volume. A slightly higher bar is cleared by the same preparation done more thoroughly: blueprint-weighted practice, with adult medicine and surgery taking half the time.
  2. Use the AMC app for calibration. It is written to the blueprint and the expected standard; your performance on it is the AMC's own signal.
  3. Practise the adaptive discipline. Every question must be answered before the next appears and there is no going back, so decision speed matters. Timed 150-question sessions at 3.5 hours are the right rehearsal.
  4. Ignore "pass rate" marketing. Provider-reported success rates describe self-selected groups and say nothing about the standard.

What this means for you

The AMC has moved a bar you cannot see by an amount it describes as slight. The sensible reaction is the same preparation with less slack: blueprint-weighted questions, full-length adaptive-style practice and the AMC's own app as a benchmark. FAME's AMC-1 plan and question bank are organised by the AMC blueprint categories with 150-question timed sessions.

Two questions candidates ask

Will my 2025 result be reassessed under the new standard? No. The AMC's FAQ says candidates who sat in 2025 were assessed under the previous standard and that past results will not be reassessed; every result is judged against the standard in place when the exam was sat.

Is the pass mark now higher than 250? Not as reported. Performance continues to be reported on the 0–500 scale with the pass mark described as 250; the slightly higher cut score is built into that scale, so a pass still reads as 250 even though the ability it represents has risen a little.
