AMC Workplace-Based Assessment or Clinical Exam: Which Route to the Certificate?

Once the AMC CAT MCQ is passed, the Standard Pathway offers two ways to complete the clinical requirement for the AMC Certificate. The AMC's page states that "the following assessment options must be passed to obtain an AMC certificate": the AMC Clinical Examination, or a workplace-based assessment (WBA) programme, which the AMC describes as something a candidate "can apply to complete" instead of the clinical examination, running over six to twelve months. The choice shapes a year of your life, so it deserves a clear comparison.
The clinical examination
- 16 assessed stations and four rest stations; two pilot stations are usually unscored; the pass is decided on 14 scored stations with 9 or more required.
- Each station is 10 minutes: two minutes' reading, eight of assessment, across history, examination, diagnostic formulation, and management or counselling.
- In person or online (desktop or laptop only).
- Fees reduced in 2026 to 3,000 in person and 3,400 online.
- Results three weeks after the examination, on the Friday at 4.00 pm.
The workplace-based assessment
- A programme of assessed clinical practice over six to twelve months in an accredited Australian setting, with multiple assessments by supervisors across the period.
- Requires a place on a WBA programme, which in practice means an eligible position in Australia under appropriate registration arrangements.
- Replaces the single examination day with sustained assessment of real work.
How to choose
- Where are you? A candidate in Pakistan without an Australian post has one realistic option: the clinical examination. The WBA presupposes employment in Australia with a provider that runs the programme.
- How do you perform under examination conditions? Strong clinicians who freeze in OSCEs may prefer the WBA's longer, real-world assessment. Candidates who rehearse well and want the certificate quickly prefer the examination.
- What is the timeline? The examination can be completed in a day once booked; the WBA is six to twelve months by design, but it runs while you are employed, so it may be the faster route to settled practice if a post is already in hand.
- What are the costs? The examination has a fixed fee and travel if in person; the WBA has programme costs set by the provider and is undertaken while earning.
Preparing for either
Both routes assess the same competences: safe history and examination, diagnostic reasoning, management and communication in the Australian context. Preparation for the examination is station-based and timed; preparation for the WBA is the daily practice of good medicine documented against the programme's assessments. In both, familiarity with Australian guidelines, referral pathways and health-system terminology matters.
After the certificate
The AMC Certificate leads to an application for general registration with the Medical Board of Australia through AHPRA, where English-language proficiency and the Board's requirements are checked.
What this means for you
For most Pakistani candidates the question answers itself by geography: the clinical examination first, with the WBA as the route for those who reach Australia on provisional arrangements. Decide early, because the preparation differs. FAME's AMC resources support the MCQ and the station-based preparation for the clinical examination.
Two questions candidates ask
Who runs the workplace-based assessment programmes? Accredited Australian providers approved by the AMC, within health services that employ the candidate under the registration arrangements the programme requires. The AMC's pathway pages list the current providers and their application processes.
Is the WBA the quicker route? Not in calendar terms: it runs over six to twelve months by design, against a single examination day. It can be the faster route to settled practice for a doctor who already holds an eligible post, because the assessment and the job run together.
