FCPS-I Repeat Candidates: Seven Mistakes That Keep the Score the Same

CPSP's rules allow a candidate to sit FCPS-I in three of the four sittings each year, and the college's application forms distinguish fresh from repeat candidates. Repeating is common and not shameful; what is avoidable is repeating with the same plan. Over several years of teaching FCPS-I candidates, the FAME team has seen the same seven errors in people whose scores stay flat. Each comes with a concrete fix.

1. Reading more instead of answering more

The commonest response to a failed attempt is to buy a bigger book. FCPS-I is a 200-question, single-best-answer paper; it rewards recognition and application under time pressure, which only question practice builds. Fix: cap reading at the paragraphs your wrong answers point to, and raise your daily question count.

2. Never finding out what went wrong

Many repeat candidates cannot say which subject cost them the pass. Fix: sit a full timed mock in your subject group before you restart and let the per-subject breakdown set your order of work. Weakest first, every time.

3. Changing the subject group for the wrong reason

Switching from Surgery and Allied to Medicine and Allied because "the paper was easier" ignores that the basic-science emphasis also changes. Fix: change groups only for career reasons, and if you do, treat it as a fresh preparation, not a repeat.

4. Collecting recalls without a syllabus

Recalls are useful for pattern and emphasis, but a folder of unorganised recalls becomes the whole plan. Fix: organise everything by subject and system, so that a recall sits next to the concept it tests and the question bank items on the same topic.

5. Practising untimed

Candidates who "know it all at home" and fail in the hall are almost always slow. The paper gives 72 seconds a question. Fix: every practice block timed, with a two-minute rule for moving on, and a back-to-back Paper I and Paper II pair at least twice before the exam.

6. Leaving blanks

A single-best-answer paper with no negative marking punishes blanks absolutely. Fix: decide now that every question gets an answer, and practise finishing with three minutes to spare for the flagged ones.

7. Starting the same way, at the same time

Repeat candidates who begin eight weeks out, with the same resource, in the same order, get the same score. Fix: twelve weeks, a baseline mock, weakest-first order, one error log, and a four-week mock phase. The 2027 sittings are 5 January, 6 April, 6 July and 5 October; counting back twelve weeks tells you the start date.

A note on the application

Repeat candidates use the repeat form on the CPSP e-Portal with their enrolment number, pay the examination fee as before, and are bound by the same deadlines and the three-attempts-a-year rule. Centre and subject changes are made through the portal only. Check the sitting's notification for the fresh and repeat submission windows, which are not the same.

What this means for you

Treat the repeat as a diagnosis-and-treatment problem. The diagnosis is a timed mock and an honest subject breakdown; the treatment is question volume, order and timing. FAME's FCPS-1 question bank, recalls organised by system and timed mocks were built for exactly this cycle, and the dashboard's subject analytics give the diagnosis in an afternoon.

Two questions repeat candidates ask

How many attempts am I allowed? The notification we cite sets a maximum of three sittings in a calendar year. For any overall limit, read the current sitting's notification and the CPSP regulations rather than a forum; rules are the college's to set and change.

Should I switch to a different question bank? Not in the middle of a plan. A change of bank resets your sense of difficulty and your analytics. If you do change, do it at the start of a preparation cycle and stay with the new one through the mock phase.
